A new book chapter Masaru co-authored with Dr. Patricia Duff has just been published in the second edition of Alternative Approaches to Second Language Acquisition, edited by Drs. Dwight Atkinson and Elena Taylor (Routledge, 2026).
The chapter, titled “Language Socialization Approaches to Second Language Acquisition in Changing Multilingual Contexts,” updates and substantially expands on the earlier 2011 edition by Duff and Talmy. It offers a current synthesis of how language socialization (LS) research is contributing to our understanding of second language acquisition in an increasingly multilingual, multimodal, and socially complex world.
In the chapter, we situate LS as an interdisciplinary framework for examining how learners develop linguistic, cultural, and communicative repertoires through mediated interaction across home, school, peer, workplace, and online contexts. We discuss the theoretical foundations of LS, ethnographic and discourse-analytic research methods, and recent findings on topics such as transnational and study-abroad experiences, multimodal academic socialization, social positioning and contestation in classrooms, social networks, and the socialization of sociohistorically marginalized and minoritized language users.
The volume itself brings together leading and emerging SLA scholars to provide a comprehensive overview of nine alternative approaches to the field:
- Complex Dynamic Systems Theory: Diane Larsen-Freeman, Ali H. Al-Hoorie, and Phil Hiver
- Sociocultural Theory: James P. Lantolf and Jiao Xi
- Poststructuralist Social Identity approaches: Bonny Norton and Carolyn McKinney
- Conversation Analysis: Simona Pekarek Doehler and Klara Skogmyr Marian
- Language Socialization: Patricia A. Duff and Masaru Yamamoto
- Decolonial Approaches: Lourdes Ortega
- Corpus Linguistics: Xiaofei Lu and Yuanheng (Arthur) Wang
- Assemblage Approaches: Steven L. Thorne and John Hellerman
- A Sociocognitive Approach: Dwight Atkinson and Elena Taylor
